National Disability Insurance Scheme

What is NDIS?

The NDIS will provide all Australians under the age of 65 who have a permanent and significant disability with the reasonable and necessary supports they need to enjoy an ordinary life. The NDIS will help people with disability achieve their goals. This may  include greater independence, community involvement, employment and improved wellbeing. As an insurance scheme, the NDIS takes a lifetime approach, investing in people with disability early to improve their outcomes later in life. The NDIS also provides people with disability, their family and carers with information and referrals to existing support services in the community. By 2019, the NDIS will support about 460,000 Australians with disability.

What is an NDIS plan, and how is it created?

NDIS plan is a personalized document that outlines your goals, needs, and the supports required to help you live your best life. It is developed in collaboration with an NDIS representative during a planning meeting.

Here’s how the process works:

  1. Pre-planning: Before your planning meeting, think about your current supports, goals, and future aspirations. This will help you prepare for the conversation.
  2. Planning meeting: You’ll meet with an NDIS representative (in person, over the phone, or online) to discuss your needs, goals, and the supports you require. Be ready to talk about:
    • Daily tasks and activities.
    • Existing supports from family, friends, or community groups.
    • Goals you want to achieve (e.g., education, employment, independence).
  3. Plan creation: Based on the discussion, the NDIS will develop a tailored plan that includes:
    • The goals you want to achieve.
    • The supports the NDIS will fund.
    • Informal and community supports available to you.

Once your plan is approved, you’ll receive a copy, and you can start using your funding to access supports and services.
